Have you ever heard of PCOS? It stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a common health condition that affects many women. After reading this quick blog post, you can learn more on my YouTube video here.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. The exact cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
One of the key features of PCOS is an imbalance of hormones, including high levels of androgens (male hormones) such as testosterone. This hormonal imbalance can lead to a variety of symptoms, including irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne, and difficulty getting pregnant.
Women with PCOS may also have enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges.
How is PCOS Diagnosed?
There is no single test to diagnose PCOS. Diagnosing PCOS involves a combination of medical history, physical exam and often laboratory tests +/- transvaginal ultrasound.
If you suspect you may have PCOS due to symptoms like irregular periods, acne, hair growth in unusual places, or difficulty getting pregnant, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider. Early diagnosis and management of PCOS can help alleviate symptoms and reduce the risk of complications such as infertility, diabetes, and heart disease.
By understanding what PCOS is and how it is diagnosed, individuals can seek appropriate medical care and make lifestyle changes to manage the condition effectively. Remember, you're not alone, and there are resources available to support you on your journey to better health.
